How to Track Sheep Feed Cost per Head
A simple method to connect feed purchases, inventory usage, animal groups and days on feed to a clearer cost per head.
Define the period and group
Choose a clear date range and animal group. Record the opening head count, additions, removals and animal-days when the population changes significantly. A simple average head count may be sufficient for a stable group.
Capture feed issued, not only purchased
Purchases show cash outflow, but feed issued from inventory shows consumption. Record each feed item, quantity and unit cost. Keep units consistent and account for returns, transfers and material losses separately.
Calculate a useful figure
Total feed cost for the group equals the quantity of each feed item issued multiplied by its cost, summed for the period. Divide by animal-days for daily cost per head, or by the agreed average head count for period cost per head.
Interpret with context
Compare like with like: similar ages, production stages, periods and feed formulations. A lower cost is not automatically better if growth, condition or health declines. Review cost alongside weight and outcome records.
